Articles by Walter Williams
Elites and Tyrants: The Fruits of "Social Justice" (October 7, 2009) It just turns out last century's notables in acquiring powerful central government, in the name of social justice, were Hitler, Stalin, Mao, but the struggle for social justice isn't over yet, and other suitors of this dubious distinction are waiting in the wings.
Is Disagreement with Obama Racism? (September 29, 2009) Americans should disavow and not fall prey to the racial rope-a-dope being played on us by the nation's race hustlers.
Michael Moore's New Film "Capitalism: A Love Story" (September 23, 2009) Aware of Michael Moore's previous films, I know that it will be at best a misleading story about capitalism. So let's do some defensive mental preparation, not about the film but what is and what is not capitalism.
Obama's Betrayal of Education (September 16, 2009) Instead of President Obama addressing school students across the nation, he might have accomplished more by focusing his attention on the educational rot in schools in the nation's capital.
Barack Obama: Seducer of the Young (September 8, 2009) The primary goal of health care "reform" is the enactment of the legal basis for totalitarianism. So many of the provisions of the health care bill, to a close reading, set a precedent for government control of every single basis of our lives -- health care or not.
Washington's Lies (September 7, 2009) President Obama and congressional supporters estimate that his health care plan will cost between $50 and $65 billion a year. Such cost estimates are lies whether they come from a Democratic president and Congress, or a Republican president and Congress. You say, "Williams, you don't show much trust in the White House and Congress." Let's check out their past dishonesty.
Inflation and Deficits: Politicians Cause Inflation (September 2, 2009) Thinking of inflation as rising prices permits politicians to deceive us and escape culpability.
Not Much: What Will They Learn in College? (August 26, 2009) At some colleges, students may satisfy general education requirements with courses such as "Introduction to Popular TV and Movies" and "Science of Stuff." Still other colleges allow the study of "Bob Dylan" to meet a literature requirement and "Floral Art" to meet a natural science requirement.
Is Racial Profiling Racist? (August 19, 2009) Some years ago, the Rev. Jesse Jackson complained, "There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery -- then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved."
Politics and Blacks (August 12, 2009) The solution to most of the major problems that confront many black people won't be found in the political arena and by electing more blacks to high office.
Exploiting Public Ignorance (July 29, 2009) Secure in the knowledge that the American people are compliant and willing to cast off the limitations imposed on Washington by the nation's founders, future administrations are probably going to be even more emboldened than Obama and the current Congress.
The Racism of Diversity (July 22, 2009) One of the unappreciated aspects of preferential treatment, is that it runs the risk of creating racist attitudes, and possibly feelings of racial superiority, among whites and others who were formerly racially neutral.
EPA Cover-up: "Cap and Trade" -- A Radical Environmentalist's Dream Come True (July 15, 2009) "Cap and trade" is first a massive indirect tax on the American people and hence another source of revenue for Congress. More importantly "cap and trade" is just about the most effective tool for controlling most economic activity short of openly declaring ourselves a communist nation and it's a radical environmentalist's dream come true.
Senate Slavery Apology (July 8, 2009) The Senate apology is nothing more than political theater.
Vicious Academic Racists Take On "The Asian Menace" at The University of California (July 2, 2009) When there are policies that emphasize and reward academic achievement, Asians excel. College officials and others who are proponents of "diversity" and equal representation find that outcome offensive.
Why a Bill of Rights? (July 1, 2009) Why did the founders of our nation give us the Bill of Rights?
Live Free or Die (June 17, 2009) "You can live as free men, but, if you choose not to, your society will die."
Many Of Today's Americans Love Government (June 10, 2009) Today's Americans, enticed, perhaps enchanted, by charismatic speeches, are ceding so much power to Washington, and like yesteryear's Germans are building the Trojan Horse for a future tyrant.
Dumbest Generation Getting Dumber (June 3, 2009) Under today's education system the longer kids are in school and the more money we spend on them, the further behind they get.
The Housing Boom and Bust (May 27, 2009) Hot off the press is my colleague Dr. Thomas Sowell's 43rd book, "The Housing Boom and Bust." The book is an eye-opener for anyone interested in the truth about the collapse of the housing market that played a major role in our financial market crisis.
Empathy Versus Law (May 20, 2009) President Obama's articulated criteria for his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court is: "We need somebody who's got the heart to recognize -- the empathy to recognize what it's like to be a young teenage mom, the empathy to understand what it's like to be poor or African-American or gay or disabled or old. And that's the criteria by which I'm going to be selecting my judges."
Race Talk for "African-Americans" (May 13, 2009) Having been around for 73 years, I have been through a number of names. Among the polite ones are: colored, Negro, Afro-American, black, and now African-American. Among those names, African-American is probably the most unintelligent.
Fraud in Academia: Grade Inflation 101 (May 6, 2009) Possessing a college degree often does not mean much in terms of basic skills.
The Police and Laws Are No Substitute for Moral Values (April 29, 2009) A civilized society's first line of defense is not the law, police and courts but customs, traditions and moral values.
Parting Company: Rick Perry and Seceding From The Union (April 22, 2009) Texas Gov. Rick Perry rattled cages when he suggested that Texans might at some point become so disgusted with Washington's gross violation of the U.S. Constitution that they would want to secede from the union. Political hustlers, their media allies and others, who have little understanding, are calling his remarks treasonous. Let's look at it.
Global Warming Rope-A-Dope (April 18, 2009) Atmospheric scientist Stanley B. Goldenberg of the Hurricane Research Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said, "It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is only a fringe of scientists who don't buy into anthropogenic global warming."
Abhorrence of Democracy and Mob Rule (April 15, 2009) Democracy and majority rule give an aura of legitimacy to acts that would otherwise be deemed tyranny. The founders of our nation held a deep abhorrence for democracy and majority rule.
Taxation 101: Who Pays Corporate Taxes? (April 14, 2009) A subject area in economics, called the incidence of taxation, says that the party upon whom a tax is levied does not necessarily pay the tax. They might shift it onto some other party. That's precisely what corporations do. They are merely tax collectors.
Taxes and Prosperity Lost (April 13, 2009) You might wonder how congressmen can get away with taxes and other measures that reduce our prosperity potential. Part of the answer is the anti-business climate promoted in academia and the news media. The more important reason is that prosperity foregone is invisible.
Government Deception About Government Finances (April 8, 2009) Congressional deception about government finances means today's children will face a financial disaster that will make today's mess seem like a walk in the park.
