About Glenn Woiceshyn
"Anyone who fights for the future, lives in it today," wrote Ayn Rand, my favourite novelist and philosopher, in the Introduction to her book: The Romantic Manifesto.
This statement is profoundly true. And her philosophy of Objectivism -- of reason, rational self-interest, individualism, laissez-faire capitalism, and romanticism (in art) -- offers a future worth living in today, a future worth fighting for.
For good or for evil, ideas move the world. Unfortunately, thanks to our mainstream intellectuals, the world today is moved by evil ideas grounded in mysticism, skepticism, subjectivism, altruism, collectivism, statism and nihilism. Thankfully, Ayn Rand provided "new intellectuals" -- i.e., "anyone who chooses to think" -- with "a philosophy for living on earth," and the intellectual ammunition needed to bring about a Second Renaissance.
Before deciding to become a "new intellectual" qua writer, I trained and worked as a professional engineer and, for a decade (1986-95), ran a small, successful petroleum engineering consultant firm. I switched careers for several reasons; but the main reason is that my love for philosophy and writing grew even stronger than my love for engineering. My current life goal is to fully understand Ayn Rand's marvelous philosophy, and to fully integrate it into my life. Writing serves that end perfectly.
Between 1995 and 1997, I studied philosophy and writing, full time, at the Objectivist Graduate Center of the Ayn Rand Institute as an auditing student. I began my writing career in the Fall of 1997. (My OGC instructors included: Leonard Peikoff, Harry Binswanger, Peter Schwartz, Gary Hull and Robert Garmong. Many people have contributed to my intellectual growth, but I'm most indebted to Leonard Peikoff, Harry Binswanger and Peter Schwartz -- all great men.]
Since 1989, I have had dozens of letters-to-the-editor published in newspapers, mostly in Toronto's Globe and Mail. (My published letters represent a very small fraction of what I submitted to the media.) My present focus as a freelancer is to write articles (targeted for newspapers) applying Objectivism to current issues and newsworthy events. Since I am a new writer, and since it is very difficult to get newspapers to publish articles sympathetic to Ayn Rand and her philosophy, I still write letters-to-the-editor, which are relatively easier to get published.
If you would like to fight for the Second Renaissance, but can't afford the time, I strongly recommend giving financial support to The Ayn Rand Institute.
If you are new to Ayn Rand's philosophy, and are interested in it, then I recommend (being noncommital about what others say about it until you have at least finished) reading the following books:
1) Atlas Shrugged -- a novel by Ayn Rand (Theme: The role of the mind in human existence.) 2) The Fountainhead -- a novel by Ayn Rand (Theme: The virtue of independence.) 3) Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand -- by Leonard Peikoff
This last book presents Objectivism brilliantly, in its essentials and in hierarchical order, and provides reference to all of Ayn Rand's other works.
A key to understanding Objectivism, I found, is to understand her theory of epistemology -- the nature and means of human knowledge. (See: Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology -- by Ayn Rand.) It makes everything else crystal clear.
Cheers!

What is Good Government? (March 10, 2009) A lesson that sadly so-called "conservatives" like George W. Bush and his "liberal" clone Barrack Obama still have yet to learn.
Israel's Government Deserves Moral Condemnation (August 14, 2006) The Government of Israel deserves moral condemnation for its overall response to Hezbollah.
Blame Hezbollah and Iran for Death of Qana Children (July 31, 2006) Responsibility for the tragic deaths of scores of Lebanese women and children in Qana, Lebanon falls on Hezbollah and its backers, Syria and Iran, not on Israel.
United Nations is Guilty for the Death of its Observers (July 28, 2006) Responsibility for the death of four United Nations observers in Lebanon falls primarily on Kofi Annan and the UN--not Israel.
Western Leaders Provide Comedy to Iran's Dictators (July 21, 2006) When the mullahs of the Islamic dictatorship of Iran are not chanting "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," or not issuing money, weapons and orders to their global terrorist networks, or not monitoring the progress of their nuclear weapons program, one can be certain they are not watching comedy shows on television. Why? Because they have been getting enough laughs from the comical behavior of Western leaders and the United Nations.
Why I Refuse to Celebrate Canada Day (June 29, 2006) I will not celebrate Canada Day in 2006 or thereafter until our government stops treating us like serfs and starts protecting our individual rights--which is the only proper function of government.
Multiculturalism Breeds Terrorism (June 24, 2006) Canada's current problems with its natives, French separatists, and "home grown" terrorists are all manifestations of multiculturalism.
"Market Failure" Doesn't Exist (June 21, 2006) The allegation of "market failure" is used by leftists and other power-lusters to justify government interference in the free market, such as price controls, coercive union legislation, massive regulations, taxation schemes, antitrust laws, minimum wage laws, etc.
Open Kyoto to Debate (April 8, 2006) Kudos to the 60 scientists for criticizing the Kyoto Protocol as politicized science and calling for a public debate on climate science.
Canada's Healthcare System is Bad Medicine (March 31, 2006) The failure of Canada's experiment with socialist medicine is readily apparent: long waiting lists and wait times for specialized services, conveyor-belt treatment for routine services, chronic shortages of family doctors and hospital beds, gross inefficiencies, slow innovation, stifling and wasteful bureaucracies, warring 'special-interest' groups, and the exodus of good doctors to greener, freer pastures.
Robert Fulford's Confusions Over Capitalism (March 24, 2006) Robert Fulford conveys confusion about the meaning of capitalism.
Whitewashing Academic Pathology (March 21, 2006) Far-Left academics are not motivated by a "sense that life is inherently unfair" and a desire to support the "underdog." Otherwise, they wouldn't be so indifferent to victims of brutal dictatorships.
Democracy vs.The Essence of Liberty (February 11, 2006) Ever since the discrediting of communism, leftists have been championing a purposely vague thing called "democracy" as the essence of political freedom.
Public Schools are Not Accountable to Parents (February 4, 2006) The government should phase itself out of education and let private schools freely compete to offer parents the best value at the best price.
Free Hand to the Mob (January 21, 2006) The UN has proven impotent in preventing dictatorships from sponsoring terrorism and committing other atrocities.
Ban on "Partial-Birth" Abortion Violates Women's Rights (June 5, 2004) U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton of San Francisco was right to declare the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act--signed last year by President Bush--unconstitutional. Such a ban constitutes a grave threat to women's health and a violation of their rights and should be struck down.
Ban on "Partial-Birth" Abortion Would Be a Blow to Individual Rights (September 25, 2003) Given last week's Senate vote, Congress will soon ask President Bush to sign a bill banning "partial-birth" abortions. Such a ban would constitute a grave threat to women's health and a serious blow to individual rights.
Bush's Attack on Partial-Birth Abortions Is a Scheme to Outlaw all Abortions (February 28, 2003) Those who are truly pro-life must fight any law prohibiting abortion, and do so on principle--the principle of individual rights--the principle upon which this pro-rights country was founded.
Public Education is Not Accountable to Parents (January 27, 2003) Public education involves forcing people, via taxation, to pay for public schools. Individual parents are thereby denied the right to choose which school receives their education dollars, i.e., the right to reward the best schools for performance. This makes schools directly accountable to politicians and government bureaucracies -- not to parents.
Terrorist attacks in Kenya (December 4, 2002) The U.S. "war on terrorism" has so far been a failure because, with the exception of Afghanistan, the U.S. has been practicing the hopeless policy of appeasement, the same decades-old policy that allowed terrorists to become powerful enough to murder 3,000 people in one day on American soil. Such appeasement has only strengthened the resolve of Islamic terrorists and their sponsors.
Letters: "Innocents" of War new! (September 19, 2001) The sworn enemy of the terrorists who destroyed the World Trade Centre and murdered thousands of innocent people is capitalism.
Letters: Its Time to Defend Capitalism (September 17, 2001) The sworn enemy of the terrorists who destroyed the World Trade Centre and murdered thousands of innocent people is capitalism.
Humans Keep Out! Environmentalists Excluding People from Parks (August 5, 2001) Human enjoyment of the parks -- sightseeing, golfing, hiking, skiing, biking, canoeing, camping -- is being systematically sacrificed to environmentalist ideology. As long people believe that environmentalism is compatible with human enjoyment of nature (or anything), environmentalists will continue to prevent people from enjoying the parks. What makes these environmentalists tick?
My Home-School Experience Demonstrates the Benefit of a Rational Approach to Education (September 20, 2000) Nothing short of a revolution in the education system will counter the damage of Progressive Education.
Governments Sacrifice Humans for Bears (September 1, 2000) The government has become an agent of nature-worshiping environmentalists who value pristine nature above human life.
The Fundamental Cause of Today's Social Ills (July 20, 2000) So philosopher Mark Kingwell believes that the cause of social ills like "crime and riots and beggars on the street" is the envy created by people experiencing poverty?
Why I Won't Celebrate Canada Day This July (July 2, 2000) This year I will not celebrate Canada Day -- as a matter of principle.
Supreme Court Should Protect Right to Abortion in Current Partial-Birth Case (April 24, 2000) Anti-abortionists are making a comeback. A woman's right to abortion is rapidly being eroded by the proliferation of state laws banning certain types of abortions.
Industrialization: The Environmentalist's Version of Original Sin (March 6, 2000) Environmentalists -- notorious for making doomsday predictions about man's industrial activities while appealing to "science" -- are now turning to religion to halt the "sins" of industrialization and development.
The Basis of Good Government: The Protection of Individual Rights (October 17, 1999) Bad government is not an inevitable condition of social existence -- it's root cause is the failure to uphold and protect individual rights.
